Rising Star Html5 Game
BACKGROUND.
Intel launched an Xbox Kinect game called “Discovered” where you can act alongside action hero, Chris Evans, be Redfoo’s guest DJ, and walk the red carpet as Chanel Iman’s date. With the release of this game, the client wanted to expand beyond the Xbox platform and cast a wider net to achieve greater reach. With a limited budget, Intel wanted to piggyback off of the Xbox game to “discover” more Intel fans and find that rising star.
Here is a trailer for the video game:
THE ASK.
Create a spinoff of the Intel Discovered Xbox game that can be easily accessed by a wider audience.
MY ROLE.
I was the Creative Director on this assignment. We were extremely short on staff so I also worked on the UX and UI Designs (storyboards, wireframes, use case scenarios) and art directed the designs. I was responsible for walking clients through our concepts, our wireframes, and our designs.
MY PROCESS.
To make this game accessible to a greater mass, we decided that the experience should be a responsive html5 web game. At this point, html5 was rather new so much research had gone into nailing down that seamless gaming experience. Like the Xbox game, Rising Star had 3 different types of games for you to choose from: being a movie star, a DJ, and also a fashion model. The user would be able to carousel through the options to select which game s/he wanted to play. Based on the performance, user would be able to create a winner or a loser poster using a photo of themselves. They would be able to share it on their favorite social networks as well.
THE RESULT.
The entire game was responsive and worked perfectly across all browsers. This project was especially impressive as we were able to achieve some “never-been-done” things before in html5, including the record spinning animation, music playing in the background, beats popping up dynamically based on beat, upload images, and create posters on-the-fly, and share their adventures with friends on Facebook and Instagram. The game was inserted into the Discovered homepage as an iframe where fans could play from the same site. Additionally, “Rising Star” had it’s own unique landing experience as well where fans can play the game.
