The Trade Show Challenge
Pitney Bowes Presort Services delivers immense value by consolidating, commingling, and sorting mail prior to USPS deposit—maximizing volume discounts and optimizing zip code density for enterprise clients. However, explaining presort logistics at high-traffic industry events (such as the National Postal Forum) was historically a major hurdle. Attendees routinely bypassed traditional slide decks, promotional videos, and static booth graphics because the core value proposition felt abstract and complex. To break through trade show fatigue, we needed a visual “show stopper”—a physical, tactile installation that stopped attendees in their tracks and visually demonstrated how presort work saves businesses time and money.
Strategic & Experiential Scope
Concept & Spatial Design:
Invented a dynamic, kinetic “Rube Goldberg” wall exhibit that physically gamified the commingling and sorting pipeline using branded stress balls, clear pneumatic-style tubing, and mechanical sorters.
Kinetic Narrative Mapping:
Translating logistics concepts—mail pickup, merging, zip code density optimization, and final tray sorting—into intuitive physical mechanics.
3D Fabrication & Mechanical Coordination:
Led the structural concept design, working with exhibit fabricators to engineer continuous vertical chain lifts, mechanical flippers, sizing chutes, and custom LED-lit mini facility enclosures.
Brand Copy & Messaging Integration:
Anchored the installation under the campaign headline “Expertise + Reliability = No Stress. Have a Ball.” and “Presort Services: Got Mail? We Got You.”
Central Experiential Concept
The Tactile Presort Engine:
Instead of telling attendees about logistics algorithms, the kinetic exhibit showed them—using color-coded stress balls and scaled mail items as tangible metaphors for diverse mail streams.
1.
Commingling & Mechanical Induction
The Metaphor:
Mixed mail types (First-Class Mail®, Marketing Mail®, and Bound Printed Matter) enter the presort network from different business clients.
The Kinetic Mechanism:
Stress balls of varying sizes and colors travel up a vertical chain-elevator and roll across an elevated track framed by a Pitney Bowes transport truck graphic. The balls pass through a central Plinko-style funnel and illuminated miniature Pitney Bowes processing facility, representing how disparate mail streams are picked up, combined, and commingled.
2.
Automated Sizing & Zip Code Density Sorting
The Metaphor:
Sorting mail by weight, dimension, and destination to unlock maximum postal volume discounts.
The Kinetic Mechanism:
As balls pass through the central sorter, mechanical triggers release them down clear zig-zag tubing. The balls hit a calibrated sorting ledge with precise diameter openings. Smaller balls fall into the first bin (First-Class Mail®), medium balls drop into the second bin (Marketing Mail®), and larger items travel to the final tray (Bound Printed Matter)—visually proving how sorting complexity produces organized, cost-effective mail density.
Impact & Results
National Postal Forum Showstopper
Debuted at the National Postal Forum (NPF) to immediate fanfare, serving as the central interactive anchor for the Pitney Bowes global exhibit space.
High Booth Foot Traffic & Dwell Time
Transformed passive aisle walkers into active viewers, dramatically increasing lead generation conversations for Presort Services sales executives.
Simplified B2B Value Proposition
Successfully turned an obscure, back-end logistics service into an instantly recognizable, memorable, and stress-free brand story.
Installation Architecture & Kinetic Execution
| Logistics Friction Point | Physical / Kinetic Solution | Experiential Brand Impact |
| Abstract B2B Value Proposition |
Attendees struggle to grasp the financial benefits of mail commingling and presorting. |
Modeled the entire logistics pipeline as a transparent, interactive Rube Goldberg machine using stress balls. |
| Trade Show Attention Fatigue |
Video screens and slide presentations are routinely ignored on crowded exhibit floors. |
Built a kinetic 3D display featuring continuous motion, LED lighting, mechanical flippers, and vertical lifts. |
| Complex Mail Category Sorting |
Explaining zip code density and mail-type classification sounds dry and technical. |
Engineered precise mechanical sizing chutes that drop items into labeled destination trays (First-Class, Marketing Mail, Bound Printed Matter). |
